Individual speech therapy sessions vary from 30 minutes to 1 hour in length and focus on helping your child to develop communication skills as identified in their intervention plan. The speech-language pathologist works on these skills through play, which makes learning fun and motivating. The speech-language pathologist also coaches parents and gives them tools to help their child achieve their potential beyond the clinic. In some cases, the speech-language pathologist collaborates with other service providers, such as psychologists, occupational therapists, teachers, educators and other professionals in Montreal to support the child's global development.
The purpose of a speech language evaluation is to assess your child's speech and language development and provide recommendations, such as goals for speech therapy. The speech-language pathologist selects evaluation tools depending on your child's age, speech and language abilities and your concerns. The speech-language pathologist will also ask your to complete a parent questionnaire. Evaluations include a professional report and and intervention plan, which will be reviewed with you in a follow up appointment. After the evaluation, if the speech-language pathologist thinks your child meets certain criteria, she can help you apply for subsidies, such as “le dossier pour l’intégration d’un enfant handicapé en service de garde”.
If you would like guidance to support your child's bilingual language development, the speech-language pathologist offers individual consultations and coaching to parents in this area. First, you will fill out a parent questionnaire and together with the speech-language pathologist, you will discuss your family's unique profile, including the languages that your family speaks, the languages in your extended community, and your cultural and personal preferences. During a second meeting, the speech-language pathologist will review the recommendations and your child's progress. Raising a bilingual child is a journey and I'm available to answer your questions along the way. Additional coaching services can be booked as needed.
